If I buy a PAYG mobile, can I put a contract SIM in it?

If I get an O2 PAYG mobile, can I also use my contract SIM in it? Contract is also on o2.

Well... yeah.
Only the NETWORK of the SIM matters - that is because your phone might be locked to one specific network.

You can put a PAYG, Pay Monthly, Pay Quarterly, Pay Yearly SIM in it - it doesn't matter. What matters is whether your phone will accept the SIM depending on what network your phone is locked too.

Yes, as long as it is the same network, it's not a problem (with the exceptions of Blackberry and iPhones which may or may not use special internet access points)

O2, Phones 4u, Carphone Warehouse and E2save normally sell their phones unlocked.
