Which phone has the better camera, the 20.7MP Sony Xperia Z2 or the Dual Lens HTC One M8?

I haven't used the Z2, but the Z1 which, unless I'm mistaken, is the same dealio.
I have also used the HTC One M8 for some 10 days now.

The HTC One M8's camera wipes the floor with those of the Z-series in many regards.
Action shots (kids, pets, sports etc) and low light stand out, imho.
Not so great: High contrast scenery - as in: bright sky, dark scenery. Without using HDR mode you basically have to decide whether you want the nice blue sky whit, or the lush green scenery
pitch black. The problem is: although the M8's camera and autofocus are very fast, HDR takes quite some time (compared to the iPhone 5S, e.g.). So, unless the object is perfectly still, the results are sucky.

On the other hand: The Z1/Z2 definitely represent colour more realistically - if a bit dull.
Also: the Z1/Z2 will amaze you because in near darkness you can still take recognisable images without 'flash'. Not that you'd wanna print them, but still nice. I tend to avoid flash. Not as good as the Lumia 1020 and 1520, but pretty impressive.
The main issue between the M8 and Z1/Z2 for me is only indirectly camera-related: it's the sheer bulk of the Z1/2! I never found a comfortable way of holding that huge slab. It's just unsuitable for quick snappies imho. But that is personal preference, I suppose.
I find the M8 much more pleasant in that regard. Well balanced, and I can take usable pics with one hand while fighting off Irish midges with the other.

I'd go for the M8. Probably. I'm not an Android fan, so camera aside neither of the 2 do anything but annoy me.

I said "midges"... not: midgets...
