If you cancel your contract early do you need to give the phone back?

What would they do with a used phone?
I may be wrong, but the price of the phone is part of what you're paying for your contract.
Maybe someone in the UK can correct me?
IF, however, you just stop paying, they may IMEI block your phone. They do that here in Ireland on occasion. But I think it's legally questionable.

No, your provider will not ask for phone back. They will ask you to honor your contract and continue paying your monthly fee until the end of contract even if you don't use it.
You can lower your payments by asking to exclude VAT, but that doesn't always work.
