What are the chances of a phone surviving a drop in water? 50/50? 20/80? 90/10? Is it "just your luck"?

It depends, once I fell in a lake with my phone in my pocket and was in there for around 5 minutes, I took the battery out and put in a different one (a few days later) and the phone worked totally fine. Second time I fell in a lake with a different phone, and the phone turned on after a while but the touchscreen was dead. So for me it was 50/50 (except google replaced my phone for free ). There are waterproof phones and cases you can buy.
Most of Sony's Android Xperia lineup is waterproof, and the Galaxy S5 is rated up to 30 minutes in 1 meter of water.
