How do I charge my iPad via USB?

I've just got a new iPad (version 1) and I am trying to charge it up with the USB cable connected to my computer. When I plug it in, it says "not charging" at the top right. I read elsewhere that it charges via USB 2, but it just doesn't seem to be happening. The port I plugged it into on my computer says USB 2 on it, so I think I am doing the right thing.

Yes it will trickle charge. Will be a lot slower than using the mains, or a powered USB on an iMac, but if you leave it alone for long enough it'll be fine.

I heard it actually will charge, but not while the screen is on! It's like schroedinger's cat...by looking, you influence the experiment etc...
So try leaving it connected with the screen off, and see if it charges.
Else, buy a Mac - it is what Steve wants!

It should charge if the screen is on or off, provided that it's a "powered" USB port (if you're using one on the front of your PC, or on a hub, try one on the back of your PC).

If you must have the screen off, just check the battery, then let it charge half an hour and see if it's changed.

Forgot which one, but an Android phone I used last year wouldn't charge with the screen on, either...(And no, it wasn't dissabled in settings)...that reminds me: isn't there an option to disable charging while connected to PC in iOS? Or am I thinking of another OS?

OK, will do a little testing here to see if it will charge when the screen is off... and will also try it in the back port. Thanks guys!

I've left it on the front USB port without looking at the screen since I last posted, and the battery level has gone up by 3%. So it DOES trickle charge, but only when the screen is not in use :) Thank you!
