Does a charger cut out when a phone is fully charged?

For example, if my phone is on charge for 12 hours, I'm guessing that doesn't use 4X the electricity of charging for 3 hours?

Depends... there ARE dumb-chargers and so-called smart-chargers....

All modern chargers will start off with what they call a "fast-charge". Depending on the phone of course, this means you can go from 0 to 80% charge within 2 hours (assuming minimal use during that time).

From then on it'll go into a "trickle charge", where it very slowly nudges it up to 100% (this is partly to prevent overcharge). From then on, the charger will only supply what the phone actually needs.
