What's cheaper - contract or SIM free?

Does it usually work out cheaper to take a contract or get a SIM free phone with a PAYG SIM?

Oh my...

That depends on...you.
What's your usage? Talk? Text? Email? Facebookie? International caller or skyper?
Do you like to change phones frequently? Etc etc etc

My personal usage routine is such that prepay is cheaper than any contract option available (here in Ireland).
Don't go for any clever answer. Check...REALLY check yourself. How do you use your telephony. How much data do you use, do you feel like getting the latest phone every

I'll take Jan's stance and not give you a straight answer, but I must say, sometimes it may appear on paper that a SIM Free phone might save you a few pounds, but on a contract, you are way more likely to get loyalty deals. For instance, I received £15 in credit on my bill for doing absolutely nothing last year and got a deal on an HTC Sensation which is yet to be beat by even redemption deals.

True. Even more to consider ;)
Then, depending on how fickle one is, there is the resale value of unlocked/unbranded handsets vs network versions. Also, usually unbranded devices get software updates before branded devices get them...

ALL those little things, eh ;)
