How do I check for Android app updates on Google Play?

In the PlayStore app's Menu => My Apps - if there are available update, they will be listed on top of the list of your "installed" apps. Swipe to the right, and you see all your apps, including ones you bought but uninstalled.

On Nexus 7 and presumably JellyBean in general in Google Play there is an arrow pointing to a line icon (not sure why) at the top and that takes you to the list Jan mentioned.
It will sometimes remind you that there are updates if you've not noticed them if the notification bar can then select from there to take you direct to update
