China goes iPhone 5 crazy: 100,000 pre-orders in 24 hours

China goes iPhone 5 crazy: 100,000 pre-orders in 24 hoursChina has played a huge part in Android’s ascension to global smartphone OS leader, with something stupid like 90% of Chinese smartphone owners opting for the green robot.

But the Chinese still have a place in their hearts for Apple, as evidenced by the iPhone 5 notching up 100,000 pre-orders in less than 24 hours.

China Unicom, the nation’s second largest network, told Sina Tech it took over 100,000 pre-orders on Day 1. The iPhone 5 will be released in China on December 14, having finally punched its way through China's red tape.

China plays a crucial part in determining global smartphone market share. Chinese manufacturer ZTE, for example, crept to fifth place in Q3, behind Apple, Samsung, Sony and RIM.

Apple and China have a rather amusing history, with fake iPhones built from real iPhone components, and fake Apple stores popping up (if it says “Apple Store”, it ain’t an Apple Store).

Crazier still, we had the kid who sold his kidney for iPad money, and the girl who offered to, uhm, trade her cherry for Apple. Couldn't make it up.

100,000 in a country the size of china doesn't seem as impressive as the headline..

It does when you take into account average earnings

Doesn't alter that there are probably far more people with money to waste there than there are people in total in uk for example where 100,000 preorders would be wp8 levels of interest... Well maybe not that bad..

I see what pondi's saying. Plenty of well of Chinese around. But the biggest network is dissing Apple, so it is kind of a hit.... Not sure how many Chinese use Credit Cards for pre-orders?

Wonder what the pricing is there.
Anyway seems more reasonable. Although they must have had rather more available as they didn't say they sold out...
