Chinese boy sells kidney to buy iPad 2

Chinese boy sells kidney to buy iPad 2A 17-year-old student from China, known only by his surname “Zheng”, has really taken the idea of “must have” to the next level, selling one of his kidneys in order to buy an iPad 2.

"I wanted to buy an iPad 2 but could not afford it," explains the kid. "A broker contacted me on the Internet and said he could help me sell one kidney for 20,000 yuan."

The boy stayed in hospital for three days before walking away with 22,000RMB. Incidentally, that’s enough to buy four 64GB iPad 2s in China.

Mama Zheng recalls: “When he came back, he had a laptop and a new Apple handset. I wanted to know how he had got so much money and he finally confessed that he had sold one of his kidneys."

The boy has reportedly suffered complications since the surgery. Shanghai Daily reports the story with the fantastically surreal headline: “Boy regrets selling his kidney to buy iPad”.

Attempts to track down the agents Zheng had been in touch with failed, as their mobiles were constantly switched off. Shanghai Daily adds: “The hospital claimed they had no idea about Zheng's surgery because the department that did the surgery had been contracted to a Fujian businessman.”

What do you call it when the kids making them are throwing themselves out of the building and the kids living in the country are giving up their organs to buy them? Weird...that's what I call it, damn weird.

lumoruk,
you got it...
Interestingly, in the US 7 or so years ago, 20% of college students would have given up their right to vote for an iPod.
Go figure. The country that buys and hypes and brands the stuff is willing to give up democracy for a gadget, and the people who make the gadgets are 'willing to die' to not make them or at least try them for once in their lives...
When I read about this first yesterday, about 80% of the western media's headlines had to make some fun of the issue.
That too is 'weird' indeed.
