China has been responsible for some pretty crazy Apple stories this year. There was the guy who literally sold his kidney to get the money for an iPad 2, and the girl who offered to… let’s not go there again.
Actually, this story isn’t particularly crazy. Just a bunch of fake Chinese iPhones. Fake Chinese iPhones with genuine Apple components in ‘em that is.
According to Shanghai Daily, Chinese cops arrested a gang of five crazy entrepreneurs, who sourced genuine Apple components from Guangdong then used them to build mostly-fake iPhones in Shanghai.
The cost of building one fake was 2,000 CNY, and they were reportedly sold for 4,000 CNY, just a few hundred less than the real deal. Two hundred units were seized during the bust.
"It's really hard for customers to distinguish the fake ones from the genuine ones," observed one of the cops. Somewhat amusingly, the fakes were said to behave identically, but with shorter battery life.
I’m sensing a Top 5 Crazy Chinese Apple Stories feature coming on…
