I has a class 2 16Gb in my HTC Desire. for all my general use this was absolutely fine, until I needed to transfer data to/from and it was utter pants. I now have a class 4 32Gb in my HTC Sensation and it's much better, though not as quick as the class 10 32Gb i've got in my X5A-G tablet. But in day-to-day use I would say I barely notice any difference.
