When you exit an app it's suspended to the RAM. When the system starts to run out of RAM it dumps the oldest app out of the RAM. There is no manual close. The OS manages it's own RAM usage, freeing it up as needed.

Performance-wise, manual app closing wouldn't make a positive difference. I guess the only advantage would be being able to keep a regularly used app or two suspended in the RAM at al times by closing all other apps after use.
