That's not to close, that's to delete!
Yes, and no: You don't hit the "x" on the homescreen, OP - you first double-tab the homebutton - THAT brings up the open apps at the bottom of the screen. You then tap/hold one of those icons AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN. Hit their "x" to close them.
