From a quick Google, it looks like it depends on how old the SIM is and what network it's for.

Oh, the numbers I found ranged from 50 to 500 (not particularly useful, I know).

I thought that SIM can store name + single contact number only.
You cannot do Name + Address + multiple numbers with custom tag (like London, Paris, etc.) + multiple emails + date of birth, etc.

You're right, the information it can store for each contact is extremely limited but it can store multiple contacts. It's the number of contacts which seems to differ between SIM types and networks.
