What happens when your contract allowance runs out?

What happens when your contract allowance runs out? My understanding is you'd normally be charged for any extra use, but do any networks do tariffs that simply cut off till the next month? I'm shopping around for a contract for my daughter and don't want any bill scares!

I think 3 and Tesco will both cap contracts at their monthly allowance, for no extra cost.

Yep normally get charged extra for further use, and often at quite shocking rates. Yes cut off ones are available on some networks. Known as capped usually. Tesco do it, saw an advert in 3 store the other day for such a plan too, fairly sure T-mobile do them too.
