How cheap? Cheapest is G300, but it's too cheap.

And getting more difficult to find.
On plus side seems to be a free network unlock around now.
The ics rom leaves a bit to be desired though. Vodafone uk delayed it for a while saying they were working on it then released the same one as elsewhere...

Is your current phone fubarred then?
Tbh it depends on what you want and need. Xperia u has it's fans but restricted storage is an issue for others. Camera isn't a strong point on the g300 but the micro sd is useful.
Wouldn't recommend low end samsung or htc both lack power and have low definition screens.

Define "cheap", I'd count the £280 Nexus 4 as an absolute bargain (compared the the £530 iPhone 5), but I know other people who'd never dream of spending nearly £300 on a phone.

Well if going for cheap then the £240 version might factor in too. Might be able to get discounts on that too as with the Nexus 7 from Tesco, Currys and the like (probably not comet atm )
On budget phone pages on android forums there seems to be a lot of interest in the Nexus 4 even though it's far beyond what many of them have spent before. Lots of interest from g300 owners.
Oh and the San Diego whilst it still has locked bootloader is now rooted and if a bit brave you can get to the sd slot and get that working now, currently at £180 but could go lower, that's got some oomph.
