What's the coolest phone out there?

I am looking to buy a Nokia 8800 Carbon Arte (or similar) but they are just a bit on the old side now and cant be bought new. Therefore I am looking for an alternative phone.

What do you view as the coolest looking phone. No doubt smart phones are out cos they are simply too big.

why are smart phones too big? have you not seen the explorer/wildfire???

HTC Legend: sexy, small and relatively powerful(ish).

blizzard7  Oct. 18, 2011 at 19:18

The Explorer and Wildfire are over 12mm thick. Not exactly cool.

It's very old now, but I used to love my Nokia 6500 classic. Yes it was quite basic as specs go and the battery life was pants, but it would happily slot into the tiny jeans pocket above the regular one (an advantage that couldn't be overstated in the days when I carried a phone and an iPod classic).

It also had a really premium feeling body and really high build quality even though it was super-slim, but err... the world's most fragile screen. You better hope a hair didn't drop onto the screen because it'd crack the LCD (slight exaggeration).

Other than that, yes the Legend does invoke a similar feeling of premium, my sister still loves hers even though it's quite old now. The AMOLED on it screen still beats the pants of her bf's 3GS too.

I just wanted to find out why size matters... HEHEHEHEHE ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 18, 2011 at 19:49

Lets face it here guys, the coolest phone (widely believed anyway), is the iPhone, millions love it just because...it's an iPhone...

After that, no-one really seems to care, there are nice phones and ugly phones, but no others seem to have any real, lasting "cool", factor about them...

shuwaz  Oct. 18, 2011 at 20:00

okay, okay. perhaps I need to clarrify...

I am talking about a beautiful and stylish looking phone. Google/ebay the Nokia 8800 (and its numerous variations - my favourite is the Carbon Arte). They just look like such beautiful and stylish phones. They are true timeless classics.

iPhone? Come on! It may be the 'smartest' phone out there (perhaps one of the coolest) but it is by no possible measure the most beautiful and stylish.

Think along the lines of the Motorola RAZR/wings, Nokia 8850, 8890 Arte and Nokia 7210... Phones that are still stylish and cool, even now (years later).

Treab  Oct. 18, 2011 at 20:03

do yourself a favour and check out the new RAZR i think it looks really cool aluminium kevlar and steel construction should be in the uk from november...

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 18, 2011 at 20:29

It will unfortunately come with a £500+ price tag though :(.

Treab  Oct. 18, 2011 at 20:31

he never mentioned cost :p and as its moto thats not a given... 400 quid is more likely.. which will reduce over the coming months (the atrix was released less then 2 months before the SGS2 all im saying)

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 18, 2011 at 20:36

But the Atrix was always a bit crappy looking, compared to it's HTC and Sammy rivals, this RAZR looks on par with the S2 (note-worthy it arrived 6-7ish months later though...). Shuwaz does mention size though, at 4.3" the RAZR is hardly small, been if it's very thin, no-one could call the S2 a small phone and that's thin too.

Treab  Oct. 18, 2011 at 20:39

i coulda said the samsung note :p

but the problem with this question is... 'cool' one mans 'cool' is another mans joke...

bit like the apple ifony 4s is for us..

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 18, 2011 at 20:45

True, cool is massively objective. If you're geeks like us (you don't get a choice, you're included in being a geek :p), then you'll find power and high specs cool, a la Note, SGS2 & this new RAZR. If you're an easily led sheep of a person who's drawn in by marketing departments and ad. campaigns, you'll prefer the iPhone 4S...

Btw, download a (free), app called 'voice actions', it's like Siri for android :).

Treab  Oct. 18, 2011 at 20:51

gawd no :p i dont like sitting their speaking into a phone to get a response :p

i will say this if it works as well or even comes close to the raw power of the sgs2 the razr imo is superior as it seems to have been very well built compared to the sgs2 plastic case which whilst strong doesnt feel as nice as a solid aluminium case...

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 18, 2011 at 21:15

I agree, the RAZR may well take the crown of best phone from the SGS2, as long as that processor can match the monster that is the Exynos...lets face it, in terms of power, so far, nothing has come close. Even the snapdragon at 1.5ghz is slower than the Exynos at 1.2ghz.

Is the RAZR TI OMAP powered?

Treab  Oct. 18, 2011 at 21:33

well cnet's preview says its a

Powering all of this is a dual-core 1.5GHz TI processor and 1GB of RAM

now we know its a 1.2ghz but i recon thats a typo but the TI processor is probably accurate...

Treab  Oct. 18, 2011 at 21:33

but GSM says...

Speaking of hardware, the Motorola DROID RAZR doesn't disappoint there either. It's powered by a OMAP 4430 chipset with a 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and 1GB of RAM. Onboard storage is 16GB, but if you need more it's expandable via a microSD card.

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 18, 2011 at 21:50

So is that the same chip that's in the Galaxy Nexus? With a PowerVR SGX540 gpu...which is worse than the Mali 400 and the iPhone 4S' PowerVR SGX543...

Treab  Oct. 18, 2011 at 21:53

we have discussed and ridiculed the iphones internals... lets us forget the ifony... 7 times more powerful gpu... means its throttled by its cpu...

but i think its a bit of guesswork atm regarding the processor.

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 18, 2011 at 22:37

True, though from what I've read, OMAPs aren't that great...

shuwaz  Oct. 18, 2011 at 22:47

Oh dear! I cant leave you guys alone for five minutes without making a mess of the house can I! I mean come on? Discussion moves to technical specs of a new Android phone?

Back on track... What is a truely stylish phone? I would just like some opinions. SGS2, iPhone 4 - cool, smart but not universally stylish. Dig deep, think long and hard - a phone that simply looks stunning.

Jan, where are you?

Treab  Oct. 18, 2011 at 22:58

schwaz

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i4J6t3CYxRs/TbwsNqwU6kI/AAAAAAAAAIM/PVuQW5Uhz3c/s1600/HATS+OFF.jpg

that made me lol ;)

but i repeat. you mention size but what are we talking about...

shuwaz  Oct. 18, 2011 at 23:01

ha-ha says Shuwaz (where did you get the spelling 'schwaz' from)? I'm not German.

Anyway, use the nk 8800 Carbon Arte as a benchmark (in terms of size... and style, etc).

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 18, 2011 at 23:02

Sorry....*guilty face*.... :(

Erm, I'm no good at this :p, my phones tend to be technically good and as long as they're not absolutely fugly, I don't really care...I'd recommend the HTC Legend, the last truly classy feeling phone HTC made. If you're dead set against smartphones, then maybe one of the Prada/Armani phones that are floating around...or the Nokia 6500, as previously suggested (the 6500 slide was also a classy feeling non-smartphone). Basically anything made by Nokia is well put together and usually has a pretty "timeless", look to it, IMO.

Treab  Oct. 18, 2011 at 23:08

where does shuwaz come from :p and where does jan being a woman come from ... or is it a woman oO

i still recon the LG chocolate is pretty cool...

shuwaz  Oct. 18, 2011 at 23:21

Shuwaz = its a long story. PM me via hukd if you really want to know.

Jan's one of the mobo-writers... Unless its Jan (i.e 'Yan') the European man. In which case I am flabbergaaaastered!
