Do you think it'd be ok to have a local shop fix my iPhone display? Is there much that can go wrong? Is it a tough process? Would I be better off going straight to Apple?

Nevermind telling us what model you use, eh
The 5/c/s are a bit more difficult and more expensive to fix, but a good repair shop can deal with it.
