Do you need a credit card for the App Store?

I don't have my iPhone yet but just wondering if you need a credit card for the App Store or can you use a normal debit (Maestro) card instead?

No, you need a credit card to set up your account (it can be a prepay credit card). Once registered you can pay with the iTunes vouchers that you can buy in supermarkets etc.

Or, if you attempt to purchase a free app and then sign up you can do so without entering credit card details, you can then just use itunes gift cards, thats how i set up my kids accounts

One of the regulars here suggested that.
And this old how-to seems to confirm the possibility.
All I can say is this: that doesn't work in the Irish iTunes Appstore and Mac Appstore.
But again, maybe it's something they blocked in poor old Eire?
