Do you need a credit card to create an iTunes account?

Do you need to have a valid credit card to set up an iTunes account? I mostly just want to download free apps!!!

Yes, to register you do need a credit card number!
But yes, you can just download freebies after registration.
You can also buy "topup" voucher for itunes in Tesco etc... So, you can buy apps without touching the credit card ;)

Nope! If you attempt to download something for free (like Facebook) without being signed in, when you're creating the account you'll be given the option to not associate a card.

Really? The irish store won't let you create an account without a CC number o_O (unles that changed...'s been a while)

If you just try to create an account you won't be able to get away without a card but if you're downloading a free app then the option appears. I've done it on 3 accounts from 2008 to just a couple of months ago. It's definitely available in the UK but I can't speak for Irish iTunes
