Are Cydia apps safe? Could they have malware? Obviously they're not vetted by Apple!

Of course they could be naughty. Even Apple miss a bad app now and again.
But the main repositories in Cydia are reasonably well maintained. It is a big business! There are over 25 million jailbreaked iDevices. They can't afford f*ck ups any more than Apple or Google. Plus, jailbreakers are very vocal.
No harm in googling before you decide to add an app, though. Not just for malware avoidance but also for other issues such as RAM leakage, excessive battery use etc. And hey, as the recent lockscreen issues on iOS and Android show: even the people who make our phones can f*ck'em up...
I wish the Cydia store had a comment section...
