Does using data consume more battery than wifi?

I was messaging someone inside the other day using home broadband wifi, 30% left, all good.
Then I went outside and my battery started going down in rapid chunks. Is that a normal occurrence? Is data more battery intensive than wifi?

Yes, data consumption is more power-hungry than WiFi - provided you're on a good WiFi connection. Especially if your data signal is iffy, it gets tricky, because the phone keeps looking for a good signal.
