Can data be recovered from an erased phone?

If a phone is reset to factory conditions, can someone later recover the data? I'm thinking of recycling a phone.

With forensics software? Yes. Though it depends on the phone, the OS etc...
You can overwrite the storage drive/SD-card with something like CCleaner... The partition that holds your contacts etc is a different problem.
Again: it depends on your phone. If you think you have sensitive contacts etc, you could do a reset, and then reinstall the firmware a couple of times.
