Why is data so slow even with HSDPA?

My data can be really slow sometimes, even when its supposedly HSDPA. Why is that? I have an HTC Desire original.

"sometimes" and "really slow"??? Can you be a bit more specific?
Sometimes it depends on what you're downloading and where you're downloading it from. No matter how fast my connection, some of my PC Linux updates come in at 8 kbs... it's the particular repository, not my connection ;)

Even if you're getting say 4 MB speed, your ping is still going to suck (it'll be in the hundreds as opposed to a good land-based connection being around the 20ms mark). This means that once it gets going it may seem quite fast, but until then, it'll feel really slow. Also you could have an HSDPA/ 3G+, but only one or two bars of signal so it can be as slow as an EDGE connection.
