Galaxy Tab 10.1 arrives, 8.9 hot on its heels

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 4, 2011 at 16:00

Some six months after being unveiled at Mobile World Congress, and following a fairly radical crap-we-need-to-slim-it-down overhaul, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has landed in the UK.

And great news if you’re awaiting the 8.9in version: it appears to be arriving next week.

HTC anticipating record sales in Q3, up to 8 new phones on the way

HTC anticipating record sales in Q3, up to 8 new phones on the way

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 4, 2011 at 14:00

“Prolific” is a word we often use to describe HTC. Already this year we’ve seen S variants of the HTC Desire, Incredible and Wildfire, as well as the dual-core Sensation, and the HTC Evo 3D is expected soonish. Er, and not forgetting the Salsa and ChaCha. Ahem.

CENS reports that HTC is anticipating “record sales” in Q3, thanks in part to the 6-8 new smartphones it has in the works.

Pegatron to pump out 10 million iPhone 5s

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 4, 2011 at 13:00

Is it just me, or does Pegatron sound like a giant robot based on a 60 year-old woman named Peggy? It is, in fact, a Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer. Excellent.

Digitimes reports that Pegatron has landed a sweet order for iPhone 5s. Well done, Peg.

Man, we seem to be writing about BlackBerry phones quite a lot all of a sudden. Not that I’m complaining. Makes a change from the bloody iPhone 5.

Yeah, so, the UK release date for the BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 has finally been confirmed, courtesy of Phones4u and The Carphone Warehouse. Huzzah.

Google: Patent disputes are about 'strangling' Android

Google: Patent disputes are about 'strangling' Android

David Robinson  Aug. 4, 2011 at 10:00

In a lot of cases, official company blogs make for fairly dull reading, and simply sing the praises of the company in question in biased and blinkered tones.

Well, leave aside biased and blinkered, but the official Google blog certainly isn't dull at the latest reading, with senior vice-president and chief legal officer David Drummond having made the extraordinary claim that Microsoft and Apple are trying to “strangle” Android through litigation.

HTC Sensation review

HTC Sensation review

Dave Oliver  Aug. 4, 2011 at 09:16

HTC’s latest hero handset has been lavished with just about the best of everything the Taiwanese company has to offer.

It’s the first HTC with a dual-core processor, and also comes with the 2.3 Gingerbread version of Android, HTC’s most advanced screen, its best 8 megapixel camera yet and the very latest 3.0 version of the Sense user interface. It’s exclusive to Vodafone to begin with, but probably not for long.

Qualcomm changes processor naming strategy; says goodbye to Snapdragon

Qualcomm changes processor naming strategy; says goodbye to Snapdragon

David Robinson  Aug. 4, 2011 at 09:00

As far as names go, it doesn't get snappier than 'Snapdragon', right? Well, Qualcomm doesn't agree, as it's just announced a whole new naming convention for its mobile processor range.

From now on, instead of typing out Snapdragon, we'll have the far easier job of typing S1. Or S2, S3 or S4, as it happens, depending on the speed of the processor we're talking about.

Motorola eyes BlackBerry defectors with Pax

Motorola eyes BlackBerry defectors with Pax

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 3, 2011 at 16:00

In terms of hardware, Android doesn't offer much to potential BlackBerry defectors. Those contemplating jumping the good ship RIM have very little choice in the way of portrait QWERTY Android devices.

One of the sexiest – and indeed only – options is the Motorola Pro, and it seems that Moto is in fact working on an even sexier version, called the Motorola Pax.

The Motorola Pax is said to have a 3.5in display (a tad bigger than the Pro’s 3.1in), with a dual-core processor, and probably a pretty chunky battery (a recent Stateside Pro variant boasted 1820mAh).

iPhone 5 sent for testing in wee sealed boxes?

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 3, 2011 at 14:00

A few days ago we heard that Apple’s latest smartphone had been spotted in the wild, with a low-res shot of some dude playing with what was purported to be an iPhone 5.

Now we’ve got more iPhone 5 rumour juice courtesy of the Guardian’s resident tech guy (or tech editor, more formally), Charles Arthur. Charles reckons the iPhone 5 is still heading for a September release, despite growing rumours that it might now be October.

The next big things

The next big things

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 3, 2011 at 13:00

Mobile World Congress was almost six months ago (cripes), and CES was even further back than that. It seems like only yesterday that we were looking forward to the first wave of dual-core goodness; the Motorola Atrix, the Samsung Galaxy S II, the LG Optimus 2X...

Now they’re all here, so we’re looking to the future once again and wondering what the next big thing might be. For the purposes of this feature, we’ll stick with semi-official/rumoured devices, rather than inventing a quad-core, 4.7in, 3D HTC Megaton. That sounds pretty good, actually. Terrible battery life though.

Huawei gets sexy with Vision

Huawei gets sexy with Vision

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 3, 2011 at 12:00

Huawei has lifted the lid on its latest Android effort, and the Shenzhen-based manufacturer promises its “sexiest smartphone to date”. Yowsers.

There’s also some sort of 3D element, but not in the autostereoscopic sense. Well, probably not. It’s not entirely clear.

Nokia Sea Ray not coming this month says insider

Nokia Sea Ray not coming this month says insider

David Robinson  Aug. 3, 2011 at 10:00

Hot rumours that Nokia may be readying its 'Sea Ray' Windows Phone debut device for an early reveal later this month are wide of the mark, says a source quoted by ThisIsMyNext.

Invitations for a Nokia-Microsoft co-hosted event at Gamescom in Germany later this month had raised hopes that the much-awaited new handset would make an appearance, but instead it seems it's just a chance to get together with developers and drum up interest in the project.

Samsung: We weren't gonna release that Galaxy Tab 10.1 anyway...

David Robinson  Aug. 3, 2011 at 09:00

Well, well. No sooner have we revealed that an Apple injunction has prevented Samsung from launching its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in Australia over a patent dispute, than Samsung comes out with a statement framing the facts slightly differently.

According to the Koreans, it never had any intention of releasing that version of the tablet anyway, and will be going ahead and launching a tablet Down Under anytime soon regardless of what Apple thinks.

iPhone 5: Chinese whispers become deafening

iPhone 5: Chinese whispers become deafening

Phil Lavelle  Aug. 2, 2011 at 19:00

You can tell when a new iPhone is imminent - the nearer you get to launch, the more blurry photos appear on hundreds of websites, and the sweatier our palms get in anticipation of a device that doesn't even officially exist.

Earlier this week, we showed you a stealth image that had been taken by somebody who claimed that a handset they'd shot was likely to be the fifth coming of the Jesus phone. The case was based on the fact that it was snapped in San Fransisco and looked like an iDevice never seen before.

Skype for iPad: video-calling gets some tablet love

Phil Lavelle  Aug. 2, 2011 at 18:00

Fancy some face time without having to use FaceTime? Finally, you can breathe a sigh of relief because Skype for iPad has landed and is there in black, blue and white in the App Store.

And it looks like it's landed for good - which is great, considering the last time it appeared in the App Store, it was pulled almost instantly because of a "premature release".

Egg vs. Chicken iPhone review

Lewis Curdie  Aug. 2, 2011 at 17:30

“Very much like Angry Birds,” reads one of the App Store reviews of Egg vs. Chicken. You’d be forgiven for making that assumption, given the bird theme, but that’s far from the case.

Indeed, Egg vs. Chicken is more like Plants vs. Zombies than Rovio’s modern classic.
