By default it seems new installed apps place a shortcut on the homescreen, is there a way to disable this?

Don't think so. I had a quick look when I was using the Htc One S/X and couldn' t find an option to disable it - but I assumed it could be a Sense feature. Plus, it didn't bother me much. So, I may have missed something.
