Dell Streak 7 on sale now for £299

Dell Streak 7 on sale now for £299Fancy getting into the tablet game but don't have much money to spend? Well, the Dell Streak 7 could be just the slate for you.

The Android-powered 7-incher is now officially available directly from Dell, and the Wi-Fi only model will set you back just £299.

Dell has inevitably made a few compromises to keep the price down, but it's more a case of features that have been downgraded rather than omitted completely.

A dual-core 1GHz Nvidia processor gets things off to a good start, and it's partnered by 16GB of internal storage – another plus on such an affordable device.

In terms of those compromises, that 7in screen comes in at a resolution of just 800 x 480, and it's only Android 2.2 Froyo on board, rather than the newer Gingerbread or Honeycomb.

The camera combo of a 1.3-megapixel snapper up front and a 5-megapixel affair round the back is par for the course, while you also get Bluetooth and GPS capability, as well as a full-size HDMI out port.

For now it's just the Wi-Fi-enabled Streak 7 that's available, but we assume the 3G version isn't too far away, while we're hoping to see the larger Streak 10 at some point too.

It's disappointing they've gone with a relatively low resolution screen given the price for a wifi only model isn't particularly cheap. No Honeycomb is also disappointing when it's using the Tegra 2 platform which is the reference system for the OS.

Good to see an SD card slot though rather than the mini-SD card slot on the Galaxy Tab and others (or none at all) which is a bit of a joke given their reasonably large sizes.

I am unsure out whether to go for this, the original dell streak, the samsung galaxy tab or another tablet?
I will be getting it on a 18 month contract (or 24 if the cost is more than £25 a month).

I dont need calls, just 1gb of data per month (but some free texts would be nice).
