What's the difference between a launcher and a ROM?

New to Android a wondering about a few terms including 'launcher', 'custom ROM' and 'rooting'. Any advice appreciated! :D

A custom ROM is an OS image for your smartphone model that was 'tweaked' beyond mere visuals. Apps and services built into the OS can be changed, removed; or: additional apps and/or services can be baked into the ROM. E.g. a different camera app, shortcuts what not.
ROMs are not simply installed like an app. They are flashed to your device. You lose the original OS.

A Launcher on the other hand is usually just a replacement of the default/built-in UI. The homescreen and apps launcher. Some launchers can go a bit deeper and add a lot of extra functions, widgets etc etc. But generally, they are add-on apps. You can switch back to the built-in launcher. Your OS does not get changed.

Some custom ROMs can include a changed or completely different launcher.
But a launcher doesn't come with a ROM.
