Digitimes: smaller iPad coming H2 2012

Digitimes: smaller iPad coming H2 2012Digitimes has been in bed with “sources in the supply chain” once again, and – as usual – they’ve been whispering sweet nothings about the iPad; an iPad with a 7.85in display to be precise.

It’s not the first time we’ve heard such rumours, and the sources reckon the 7.85in iPad is inspired by the Amazon Kindle Fire’s Stateside success, which presumably means it’ll be cheapish.

The 7.85in iPad will supposedly go into production at the end of Q2 2012, with a planned release “prior to the fourth quarter of 2012”. Er, that’d be Q3 then.

The article reiterates that the iPad 3 is still expected to touch down in the first quarter of 2012, in keeping with the previous launches. At this stage, the rumour mill is pretty convinced that the iPad 3 will have a 2048x1536 resolution.

Tablet shipments are expected to reach 60 million this year, with Apple’s iPad accounting for a whopping – get this – 70%. That’s 42 million iPads. Sweet Jesus.

Incidentally, my second gen iPod touch is now stuck on iOS 4.something and generally hates new games, so I’ll be first in line for an iPad 3. Just thought I’d throw that out there.
