How can I disable data in Android 2.2?

Is there some way to disable data in Android 2.2? I seem to be using lots of data even when I’m not doing anything with my phone.

Only way to completely turn off mobile data is:
1. Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile Network Settings -> Access Point Names
2. Change values by appending something that can be changed back easily. Like "tmp." or "apn."

Turning off background data, sync and mobile network does not turn off data completely. Some apps get around it. If you are roaming unchecking "Data Roaming" in same menu does the trick, no need to change APN
