DisplayMate: Samsung Galaxy S5 has the ‘best display ever’

DisplayMate: Samsung Galaxy S5 has the ‘best display ever’There’s not a great deal of difference between the Samsung Galaxy S4 (left) and Galaxy S5 (right) displays on paper, but – as is often the case – the spec sheet doesn’t tell the whole story.

In fact, DisplayMate’s Dr. Raymond M. Soneira reckons the Samsung Galaxy S5 has the best smartphone display he’s come across to date.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a 5in 1080p Super AMOLED display, while the new Galaxy S5 simply creeps up by a mere tenth of an inch. Not that much difference, right? Wrong!

Soneira writes: “With the Galaxy S5 the emphasis has shifted from the traditional yearly increases in resolution, screen size, and pixels per inch (ppi), which have dominated the headlines for the last 10 years.

“These have now played out as far as visually beneficial, so it’s time for manufacturers, consumers and reviewers to shift their attention and concentrate on the many other even more important display performance issues”.

It's much the same story with smartphone cameras, of course, with a higher megapixel count not necessarily indicating a "better" camera.

The upshot? The doc yells: “Based on our extensive Lab tests and measurements, the Galaxy S5 is the Best performing Smartphone display that we have ever tested. It has a long list of new records for best Smartphone display performance including: Highest Brightness, Lowest Reflectance, Highest Color Accuracy, Infinite Contrast Ratio, Highest Contrast Rating in Ambient Light, and smallest Brightness Variation with Viewing Angle.

“The Galaxy S5 has raised the bar for top display performance up by another notch – an impressive achievement for OLED technology!”

I saw this on Gizmodo the other day, thorough really is the understatement of the year...

Anyway, it's nice to see that Samsung's displays have finally regained the "wow factor" the S2's display had.
