Double space at the end of sentence.

This is a basic tip: If you double space at the end of a sentence - iOS will automatically turn the first space into a period. This is handy when you are writing long emails and don't want the hassle of bringing up the extra character menu.

It's handy. I found it out completely by accident.

if you've used a blackberry before, it's the exact same method...

that's because this is the standard way of ending sentences. I learnt typing at school (back when we the Commodore PET was the one school computer) and it was drilled into us that after hitting full stop (OP, it's not 'period' in the UK), you always hit the space bar twice. I still do it today automatically.

interesting.. more votes for than against... I'm certainly not going to stop doing it, and if they change it on mobiles, it would annoy a lot of people for whom full stop is not available with extra key presses.

I mean, without extra key presses (daft you can't edit your own comments)

Many bbcode systems (forums & bulletin boards, etc) automatically remove double spaces after a sentence. Often, they also do not accept

"&nbsp",
so there is no way I know of to insert a proper double space.

The double space after a sentence increases legibility. It is also the correct standard for English writing and those who argue against it usually cite (more or less arbitrary and transient) technical limitations such as 160 character limits on SMS messages.
