How do you download Android apps?

This might sound really silly, but I've just got a brand new phone on Android and I have never used this OS before, so have absolutely no idea how to download apps on it. It's a HTC Wildfire. Any tips for the newbie please?!

You should have an app called Market, simply press it and it will open the Android Market Place, then browse and download to your hearts content

To access the Market from your phone, you do need a gmail account. So, if you don't have google email, you need to set up an account.
You can also download apps to your PC, but maybe you get your head around the Market first ;)
