How do I download apps outside the Android Market?

I think there's a setting I have to change to be able to download apps from third party Android sites, but I have no idea where it is!

Yep, also: you will need a file browser on your phone to find and install the app on your sd-card. Samsung's Android phones come with a native file browser, but surprisingly, many other Android phones do NOT have one. You can find plenty of free file managers in the Market (Astro does the job, but there are others, too).

Astro will also help you backup all your 3rd party apps to memory card. Handy if you switch phones - you don't need to redownload them all again.

If you are going to search for Android apps with Google, it helps to add " .apk " to the searchstring - .apk is the Android installer file extension.

Lastly, try to stick to legal downloads ;)
