Drop it on concrete: Apple iPhone 4S vs Samsung Galaxy S II

Drop it on concrete: Apple iPhone 4S vs Samsung Galaxy S IIIf you haven't got insurance or even a case, but have got an expensive smartphone, this video is likely to make you wince. A group of people experimenting by dropping both an iPhone 4S and a Galaxy S2 from various heights onto a hard floor.

Yep, we know you'll be asking the same question as we did: why? That one's easy enough to answer: it's been posted by a third party warranty company which obviously wants to show the worst case scenario and guilt-trip us into parting with our cash.

But you just can't help but watch in a voyeuristic kind of way. And it'll probably come as no surprise that the iPhone 4S with its heavier weight and glass surround comes off worst.

Laughably, before the drop, Siri was asked if she was afraid of falling. She replied that she couldn't answer - although she may have since learned that she is following this.

The upshot is: you really don't want to drop your phone onto a hard surface. And even more than that, if it's an iPhone 4 or 4S, you really, really don't want to drop your phone onto a hard surface.

We won't spoil it and give you the full results but rest assured, with three drops per phone, it's not pretty. Enjoy!

I dropped my SGS2 on the kitchen vinyl floor, face down (as in perfectly face down - it made a "slap" sound) from waist height. Externally the phone was unscathed. Internally the blue "ink" from the amoled leaked across the screen over the course of a couple of days. I've had it replaced but i'm still loathed to buy a bulky case for such a slim phone.
