Another Dropbox question, sorry!
Does Dropbox have to download the file every time you access it? Is it really just a link? Or is the file *on* your device?

It's a link until you "download" and save the file to whatever device you access dropbox from.
Similarly, dropbox won't upload the same file twice if you have the same file on more than one device that you use dropbox with. Say you have a photo on your iPhone AND your PC. Dropbox will only sync the file once. In fact, if you have a file that is sort of public property and already on Dropbox's servers it won't upload that file at all. At leaast that is how it used to be. I haven't used Dropbox in a while. I don't like some of their shenanigans - especially in conjunction with Samsung...
