How does Dropbox work on smartphones?

Do Dropbox items take up memory on your smartphone/tablet? Or do you specifically have to download them? Confused! :3

Well, you download what you want/need. The rest stays in the cloud.
If you upload your 1,500 ebooks to dropbox from your PC, you can then use, for example, Stanza on your iPad to download the ONE book you want to read on your rail-trip. Not ALL 1,500. Whatever you do download, obviously, does take up memory space, but only what you download. And if the wrong song landed on your device, you can delete it - a copy remains in your dropbox in the cloud.
