Could dropping a smartphone damage the phone, or just the exterior?

Do people use cases to protect the smartphone's exterior, or could you damage the functionality by dropping it?

Sure; antennas could become detached, soldered components could become (partially) dislodged resulting in intermittent or permanent connection to the rest of the circuit, circuit board could get flexed and crack (possibly internal) tracks.

Not in a phone but no reason similar couldn't happen, the first Nexus 7 had some issues with the batteries connector coming loose from the device.
