You can also look into a free program called Handbrake - which is available for Win/Linux and Mac OS. Also: Google for "DVD shrink"! ;) (UNFORTUNATELY you were a bit shy with details - such as your computer's OS, the type of DVD [i.e. encrypted.DRM protected store bought ones, or self-made, copyright-free ones])

Whatever program you end up using, make sure you familiarise yourself with the settings and options.
For the small screen of the iPhone you can create great conversions - a DVD of a full 100 minute movie shrunk to 300MB is possible.
Some DVD rippers/converters have default settings that'll spit out a 2-4GB movie file which is overkill on an iPhone.

...oh, once you have the converted file on your PC, make a mental note as to it's location.
Then open iTunes. Top left corner => hit "File" THEN => "Add to library".
That opens a file browser window. Find your movie file. And choose it.
Once it's been copied to iTunes, you can delete the original file - to save space on your hard drive.
Now that your movie is in itunes, connect your phone. Click on the iPhone tab on the left. Then on the "Movies" tab. You'll see the sync screen for movies. Tick the movies you want to copy to your phone. Then hit "sync" or "apply" in the bottom right corner of the window.

;) if it was self made of course the files used to make it would have made a good starting point rather than onto dvd and back....

Although: a lot of people with limited storage on their drive burn movies to disk. Later they wonder how to get them off again.

Also, a lot of DVD Rippers don't tell you that they won't touch protected DVDs until after you installed them ;)
