Currently nearing the end of a 24-month contract on Three. What's the earliest I can upgrade?

If you are done with your contract you should not upgrade at all. Upgrade is something you do when you are still in contract.
What you looking for is a good deal out of them by saying that you would be leaving to different provider. I've been through this quite a few times, but they never gave me a good deal on the phone. It was always crappy phone or very expensive monthly fee. You can get out of them very good price for their plans only (like 25 quid one for price of 15), but you have to get your own phone.
You have to call and find out what they offer. No need to agree right away as you can always call back and maybe get offered something better.

"Best deals" when you are in the last month or out of contract.
Early repayment charge applies for earlier upgrades.
