Elop: multicore phones are a waste of battery life

Elop: multicore phones are a waste of battery lifeNokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop, has never been one to bite his tongue, and now claims that dual- and quad-core processors in smartphones are nothing more than battery killers.

HTC One X? Samsung Galaxy Note? iPhone 4S? Chuck it in the bin and grab yourself a Nokia Lumia 900.

Speaking to China’s Yangcheng Evening News, Elop screamed: "The so-called dual-core, quad-core mobile phones can only waste batteries, but not be useful for consumers all the time".

Of course, for now, the Windows Phone chassis only supports hardware with single-core processors.

Over in China, Nokia is launching a competition called ‘Blown Away by Lumia’, challenging peeps with rival handsets to perform everyday tasks with roughly £100 on the line.

It’s much the same as Microsoft’s ‘Smoked by Windows Phone 7’ promotion, which ran at CES, Mobile World Congress, and in Microsoft stores.

Elop claims that the Nokia Lumia 900 has never lost to an iPhone or Android handset, regardless of the number of cores. Needless to say, Nokia and Microsoft pick the tasks at these challenges. Ahem.

Remind me... how many battery life upgrades did the nokia 800 get...

and does it last a day like my sgs2 does? hmm dual core and never needed a battery update to make it last or single core and battery issues... hard choice...

Also windows lost several challenges...

BUT THE COMPETITION RAN BEFORE THE 900 WAS OUT... hmm no-wonder it never lost...

Seriously: in the history of business, no person was at the helm of a bigger corporate Titanic.
I have no idea why anyone still bothers with him.
They should give him plastic surgery, make him look like Assange and drop him off in Sweden ...
win-win...

Lets summarise:

Elop's a tw*t.

Pondlife  Apr. 13, 2012 at 14:17

Did he also shout as they dragged him away from the microphones, yeah even those with a single core for when they don't need the quad those really run all five they do they do the gnomes in my garden told me, they do...

Pondlife  Apr. 13, 2012 at 15:40

Surprised he didn't comment on how bigger higher resolution screens drain batteries faster too.
Painted himself into a corner for when they presumably will switch to them at some point especially with tablets.

We should all download Stair Dismount and use the picture above to paste onto the face of our 'dummy' of choice and watch him go tumbling.
It certainly makes me feel better about things :p

Elop is 100% true. Try using Android on a single core 1GHz or 1.5Ghz and you will realize how much it sucks after downloading only a few apps and games. This is not just battery life but in smooth working of the OS as well. Windows Phone might have had less sales but not anymore. Nokia Lumia 900 is selling like hot cakes in US.

SpeedyG  Apr. 13, 2012 at 16:21

Elop and his hilarious brain farts lol.

Details please, my man. What phone are you talking about specifically? What version of Android. What WP device/s are you comparing it to, what were the original RRPs? And where did you get Lumia 900 sales figures from? Nobody has those sales figures.

Pondlife  Apr. 13, 2012 at 17:14

You want a bet about that. Still won't sell more than the symbians let alone real competition this quarter.

JanSt / MOD  Apr. 13, 2012 at 17:43

Argh, it is one AT&T exec who said, "sales exceed expectations"... NO figures have been released; and how high can AT&T's expectations have been? When did they last sell a successful high-end Nokia device? Exactly ;)

mrew42  Apr. 13, 2012 at 17:52

Expectation: no sales
Reality : maybe a couple of hundred.
Result: sales exceed expectations
;)

Seems more like what would come out of sammy and htc than nokia imo!

I can see where elop is coming from given that meego, symbian and wp are all optimised for single core so he can say that for those os's but we all know android is stubborn mule unless it has 1ghz+ cpu and 512mb ram and even that is not always up to scratch.

Pity the android market is being flooded with phones that seem to just improve on screens, cpu and ram specs and **** all else e.g. 2 years since the n8 was released and it still destroys all other cameras, not to mention the new fad of removing features (micro sd anyone?).

he really ought to get some facts before he opens his mouth imo, reminds me of some only sony and ms pr folk in their gaming divisions always badmouthing each other for things the others had that they didn't!

Yes, you have a few points there; and yes, Elop needs to stop blathering. But maybe he has no facts? He's come from Adobe/Microsoft, where he was in charge of overpriced products that can be gotten for free from open-source projects. I sincerely doubt his knowledge when it comes to 'facts'! He's a sales person. He's like the spotty dude in the CPW store, just in a better suit and higher up on the ladder.

Nokia lowers Q1 Financial Expectations : http://socialbarrel.com/nokia-lowers-q1-financial-expectations/35938/

High hopes in the Lumia 900 then, Mr Elop?

JanSt / MOD  Apr. 15, 2012 at 14:22

According to latest investors warnings, Nokia needs to sell at least 27 million Lumias this year to turn the tide. They sold 2 million in Q1.

matt101101 / MOD  Apr. 15, 2012 at 14:43

Erm...well...25 million to go, 9 months to do it.

That's 2.77 million a month, good luck with that, Nokia. To put that into perspective Samsung are selling around 30,000 S2s per day, that's 900,000 per month.

Pondlife  Apr. 15, 2012 at 15:06

But the S2 is just one rather expensive phone, not sure how much perspective that puts it in.
Seems unlikely but now having a phone for sale in the states is a good start.

Treab  Apr. 15, 2012 at 15:17

well when bill gates wants to boost the rep of wp7 im sure those 25 mil will fly off the shelves...

Remember, that number is the bare minimum just to save their as*es

I'm guessing slashing prices to around 50% of the RRP (aka Lumia 710) also won't help, even if it does sell more units.
