Google chairman Eric Schmidt always seems good value for a soundbite or three, and he's been in top form at AllThingsD's Dive Into Mobile conference today.
And unsurprisingly a lot of the juicier comments had to do with Google's Motorola plaything, with Schmidt hinting at “very impressive” products in the pipelines that fit into the category of “phones plus”.
That would be the category you'd put the likes of the Google Glass specs into, but Schmidt wasn't talking specifics and there was no mention of the much-bandied-about X Phone that everyone is convinced Motorola is working on.
“They have a new set of products, which are phenomenal,” Schmidt said on stage – “they” being Motorola, obviously. “Very, very impressive.”
When pressed on whether he was talking specifically about phones, Schmidt replied: “think of it as phones-plus.”
Motorola better have something decent up its sleeve, quite frankly. August will mark two years since the Google takeover was first announced, yet you could count the number of meaningful Moto releases since then on one hand and still have a couple of fingers spare.
As for the wider topic of Android itself, Schmidt casually let slip that Android activations have now hit the seriously impressive figure of 1.5 million per day, which should see the all-conquering Google platform pass the one billion active devices milestone later this year.
Yes, that's right. One billion.
