It's taken a while to get here, but iOS users in the UK can now take advantage of free voice calls via Facebook Messenger just like their North American compatriots.
The Facebook VoIP service, which launched in the US and Canada back in January, is now live in Blighty for all Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users with the Facebook Messenger app installed.
Facebook Messenger users will now see an “I” button in conversation view, which if pressed will give you the chance to make a “Free Call” to any of your available contacts.
Aside from basic calling abilities, you can also put calls to the background, leave voice messages when contacts are offline, while as with ordinary text messaging via Messenger, push notifications are supported.
Given the existing strength of both FaceTime and Skype, though, it could be a while before Facebook's voice-calling service picks up serious momentum – especially considering it's currently only available for iOS, and only in the US, UK and Canada.
There's no word yet on when more countries (or mobile platforms) will be supported.
