Why does Facebook need to send texts?

Android... Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Facebook > Services that cost you money > Send SMS messages

What's that all about?!?!?!

I'm totally guessing here because I'm not a Facebook person, but if you send your FB-friends/contacts an SMS, it is on your buck. it's charged as an sms rather than using your "ordinary" data. I reckon it's just a warning to cover their a*ses?
Some folks assume thart if an app let's you sync contacts and get in toucH with them, it's free or uses data rather than regular SMS charges...

Or: I could be totally wrong ;)

Because FB is a data-mining company at heart. The more data they have access to, the better; in their eyes.
