How do you use Facetime?

I've had an iPhone 4 for a couple months now, but not yet used facetime. It comes up as a button when I make a call, but nothing happens when I press it. SO I really have 2 queries here:

1. Can you only use it iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 - or do older iPhones work too (tried it to my sister's iPhone 3g, didn't work)?
2. Can you use it anywhere, on the wifi or the data plan?

the answer is yes because facetime uses wifi not 3G

The iPhone 3G has no front-facing camera ;)
AS to how to use it on the iPhone 4: have a look at this guide

Both users need to be on a wifi connection, as far as I know.

It's iPhone4 to iPhone4 (or new iPod Touch) only and relies on a WiFi connection. I believe Jailbroken phones can use 3g data connections by the use of other 3rd party software.

If someone has wifi but no actual calling signal (no bars)
Will they still be able to FaceTime each other?

Nice to know, the Offshore platform I'm going to has wifi in the rooms but obviously they won't have signal, means I can chat with my lass and see her :) so happy now
