What happens if you find a phone and hand it in to the police station?

Found a phone and handed it in, yay!
But what happens now? Do the police actively try to contact the owner somehow?

Yes, as far as I know they'll make reasonable attempts to contact its owner (basically, they hope it's not password protected and try ringing home/work/mum/dad etc). I'm not sure what happens if they can't locate the owner, I know with other things they get given to the person who handed them in, but I'm not sure if the same would be true for a phone given the private nature of the information contained on it.

If it's possible you should always give items to lost and found or security when in private area. Police is not required to locate owner, while lost and found does. It's also more likely that owner will inquire with lost and found rather than police.
