Can I force my Android phone to use 2G?

Would it save battery if my Android phone used 2G instead of 3G?

Yes, switching to 2G will massively increase battery life. Settings => Wireless and Networks => Mobile Networks => Network Mode. Switch to GSM Only

There is also a built-in Widget for this. You'll find it in the Add to Home menu.

erm.. on my phone (OSF running JJ, a froyo ROM), there's an option "use only 2G networks (saves battery)"

As other's have advised, you can, but other than battery saving, it'll result in a far poorer experience with slower data speeds when browsing etc. It'd be like installing a steam engine in your brand new sports car.

@Andy247

What, and then going 140mph? Not a bad speed for any sports car
