Free Google Nexus Q for pre-order customers

Free Google Nexus Q for pre-order customersMartin was scribbling about the Google Nexus Q the other day, saying that the black ball media streaming device had proved incredibly popular with consumers over in the US of A.

Now we’re hearing that eager beavers who pre-ordered the Google Nexus Q will receive the $300 device for free. What the…?

The Google Nexus Q is no longer available to pre-order on Google Play, as Googs has decided to make a number of tweaks following early feedback (or “constructive criticism”, if you prefer).

However, Google will fire out free Nexus Qs to pre-order customers. Amazing.

An email from Google explains: “When we announced Nexus Q at Google I/O, we gave away devices to attendees for an early preview. The industrial design and hardware were met with great enthusiasm.

“We also heard initial feedback from users that they want Nexus Q to do even more than it does today. In response, we have decided to postpone the consumer launch of Nexus Q while we work on making it even better.

“To thank you for your early interest, we'd like to extend the Nexus Q preview to our pre-order customers and send you a free device. If you had other items in your order, your credit card will be charged for those items only.”

What a delightful story.

Kudos to Google for actually listening to their customers and admitted that their product needs to be improved. Extra kudos for not just cancelling pre-orders, but fulfilling them all without charge.

So far, this is winning my "big corporations being nice to real people" award for 2012.

For less than £100 you can get a WD TV live box that does much more than than the Q. It was just an awful idea, putting out a media player that's locked to a particular content store should be free, hell even the Apple TV supports other content providers.
