The best free iPhone games – part 5

The best free iPhone games – part 5And that’s us up to 20. Phew. My awful memory can barely recall which games were in part 4, never mind part 1. Maybe I’ll formulate some sort of list at some point.

I’ve shot myself in the foot a little by choosing to include the average scores from iTunes. The user reviews aren’t exactly constructive, and often contain little more than: “Best game EVER lolz!!!” (5/5) or: “Boooring dont waist ur time” (0/5). More so a reflection of the state of humanity than an indication of the quality of the games.

Ok. Less rant, more gameage. Let’s do it.

The best free iPhone games – part 5Bankshot

In Bankshot, the aim is to send your little circle thingy into the goal with a swipe of the touchscreen. It's a bit like air hockey, actually. Sound simple? The catch is: you have to bounce the circle off the outer wall at least once, and at most three times. Each bounce is called a “bank”, and more banks means more points.

To mix things up, there are various power-ups and hazards. The shield is invaluable, and means you can bounce for as long as your momentum allows; the aforementioned three-bounce restriction is temporarily lifted. There are also score multipliers, but the Death Spike and Death Wall – as the names suggest – should be avoided at all costs.

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1.3 or later.

Score: 3/5 after 490 App Store ratings.

The best free iPhone games – part 5Buganoids

Developed by Paper Toss guys, Backflip Studios, Buganoids is one of the most charming games on the App Store, free or otherwise. It’s pure 8-bit-era fun.

In Buganoids, you move around the circumference of various moons, and have to shoot little monsters that appear from craters before they make it to the outside. There’s a variety of different weapons, including rockets and fireballs, and if things get tough you can unleash a powerful smartbomb.

Buganoids is great. Check it out. The ads along the top are a little annoying though. I’m seriously tempted to upgrade to the ad-free version for 59p…

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Score: 3/5 after 349 App Store ratings.

The best free iPhone games – part 5iCopter Classic

iCopter Classic is another old-school game, wherein you fly from left to right with the simple goal of, well, not crashing. Your copter steadily descends, but a quick tap of the touchscreen gives it a vertical boost. I mention that specifically because it took me about half a dozen goes to figure out. “Worse game evur!!!” (0/5)

There are little gold coins to pick up, and the game keeps a tally of your virtual bank balance. You can use the cash to buy upgrades such as, uhm, the ability to pause to the game, and, more interestingly, different themes.

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.0 or later.

Score: 2.5/5 after 29,060 App Store ratings.

The best free iPhone games – part 5King of Tennis

I recently reviewed King of Tennis and freakin’ loved it, giving it 4/5 and describing it as “a true test of concentration.”

The name is slightly misleading, in that you don’t play tennis at all. That’d be far too obvious. Instead, you control a King and the aim is to follow the action at a tennis match. You tap the screen to move your royal head left and right, and must follow the ball precisely as it passes over the net, otherwise the match immediately stops and the crowd turn on you.

Yes, it was developed by a Japanese guy. How did you guess?

Compatibility: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Requires iOS 3.1 or later.

Score: 3/5 after 33 App Store ratings.
